Samantha Gerlach has been awarded a $4000 Anne S. Chatham Fellowship in Medicinal Botany by The Garden Club of America. The funds will support Samantha's dissertation research into the structure and bioactivity of cyclotide proteins in Psychotria leptothyrsa (Rubiaceae), a species of tree native to the Pacific region.
Samantha Gerlach was awarded a $4,000 travel grant by the American-Scandinavian Foundation, to support her dissertation research. Samantha will spend three months this summer at the Medicinal Chemistry Department, Division of Pharmacognosy, Uppsala University, Sweden. Samantha's research focuses on cyclotides, a class of unusual cyclic polypeptides known to occur in several species of tropical plants and to have antimicrobial properties. While at Uppsala, Samantha will be working with Dr. Ulf Göransson to isolate, characterize, and synthesize cyclotides from Psychotria leptothyrsa, and Pacific Island shrub belonging to the coffee family. Samantha's research is being directed by Steve Darwin (EEB, Tulane) and Paul Cox (National Tropical Botanical Garden, Hawaii). Her research is also partially supported by the Institute for Ethnomedicine, Provo, Utah.
Angela Smilanich was selected for the 2005 AWIS Educational Foundation predoctoral award.
Shawn Vincent was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science.
Rebecca Blanton won the Stoye Award for best student paper presentation in General Ichthyology.
Johanna Ecke and Pamela Thompson were the 2005 recipients of the Zoology Prize, which awards a Newcomb Senior for outstanding achievement in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.
Meghan Greeley and Ashley Olson were the 2005 recipients of the Gerald E. Gunning Memorial Award, which is a departmental award for a outstanding achievement as an EE Biology Major, for either a Newcomb or Tulane College student.
